What is a mentor?
A mentor is a positive adult role model that your child will be spending time with. Your child’s mentor is a caring adult who can listen when your child needs someone to talk to, help your child establish goals and join your child in fun activities.
Mentors have gone through an extensive background check, fingerprinting, an interview with Youth Guidance staff and a criminal records check before meeting your child.
Mentors become a very special person in your child’s life as well as an extra support for you as a parent. The friendship that blossoms between your child’s mentor and your child often makes your child feel like their mentor is an extended family member.
Why did YG start the Mentoring Academy?
When your child is enrolled in Youth Guidance, your child is eligible to attend our Mentoring Academy. Youth Guidance started the Mentoring Academy so that your child/ children can join in weekly group activities with other children their own age. Caring adult volunteers will participate in a group with your child and 3 to 4 other children. This is called group mentoring.
Our Youth Guidance Mentoring Academy programs are age-appropriate, fun activities led by Youth Guidance staff. Some examples of our programs include science, art, photography, cooking, sports, leadership skills, karate and sailing.
